St. John’s University invites applications and nominations for the position of Vice President for Advancement and University Relations. Reporting to the President, the Vice President for Advancement and University Relations is responsible for the leadership and management of the following units: 1) Division of Institutional Advancement which includes Development & Alumni Relations, 2) Office of Marketing and Communications, 3) Division of External Relations which includes Community, Government and Media Relations, and 4) Office of University Events. The combined organization has approximately 100 full time budgeted positions.

The University: St. John’s University (www.stjohns.edu) offers more than 100 undergraduate and graduate programs in its six colleges and schools, with a growing number of programs offered online. The fall 2014 enrollment of approximately 15,765 (including 4,683 high school students taking college credit) and 4,683 graduate students represents 47 states and 116 countries. The University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and 12 other major academic and professional associations and employs about 1,470 faculty members (630 full-time and 840 part-time) and 1,200 administrators and staff. As a Division I athletic program, the University offers 17 men’s and women’s programs in the Big East Conference. With 174,000 living alumni, many of whom reside within the New York City region, there is significant opportunity to grow the existing donor base. The University’s endowment is over $600 million.

Duties and Responsibilities: The Vice President for Advancement and University Relations, in consultation with the President, the Board of Trustees, and other senior administrators is responsible for developing a multi-year fundraising strategy for the University’s long-term growth. As the chief advancement officer, the Vice President supervises and coordinates the University’s efforts to build strong relationships with a broad range of constituents including alumni, donors, athletic boosters, corporations, foundations, and other friends of the University. As the chief communications officer, the Vice President is responsible for disseminating internal and external messages in order to create a sense of pride and engagement within the University and among the University’s stakeholders and to strengthen the reputation, brand visibility and public profile of St. John’s University. The Vice President shall also oversee the Office of Community, Government and Media Relations and the Office of University Events.

Qualifications: A Bachelor’s degree is required, advanced degree is preferred. Ten years of broad, progressive people management/leadership experience with at least five years overseeing a significant fund raising operation in a higher education or not-for-profit environment. Demonstrated success leading a capital campaign or equivalent fundraising effort. Experience working with foundations, corporations or comparable partnerships. Experience working in a public relations, government relations, communications, marketing, or brand management arena, with demonstrated ability to lead these functions. High degree of financial acumen and analytical skills. Outstanding communication skills. Exceptional management and interpersonal skills.
